German Quillon Dagger With Carved Boxwood Hilt
- Dated: circa 1680
- Measurements: 40cm (with mount)
The boxwood hilt carved with standing figures from classical mythology, partly in the round, with Hercules in his final Labour, Cerebus chained at his feet and a female figure at his side, perhaps Athena, the figural composition backed by a flourish of scrollwork, with small iron guard formed with a fluted shell and a pair of short drooping quillons, fitted with slender sharply tapering blade formed with a prominent full-length medial ridge on both sides, the lower half etched with panels of foliage framing a two-line inscription.
